Hi! I’m POLYGON1993, a visual artist, film director & media scenographer from Paris, FRANCE. I’m mostly known for my glitch art portraits that I’ve been creating for almost 10 years now.
Growing up in the 90s-00s, I found myself drawn to the nostalgic VHS aesthetic and stumbled upon the world of analog glitch art almost 10 years ago through the creations of Tachyons+ & BMPC. Intrigued, I decided to experiment with it myself.
I craft my visuals utilizing CRT TVs and modified video equipment from the 80s/90s. The circuit-bent gear enable me to create distortions and glitches to any content passing through the converters, video synths and TV screens.
My visuals serve as an entry into a glitchy universe that reflects my everyday experiences and memories—a distorted realm where reality and imagination seamlessly intertwine.
My primary focus lies in portrait work, and it stands out as my preferred field of expertise. The approach I take varies significantly depending on the nature of the project. When directing a video, my initial step involves sketching out ideas to conceptualize the camera work and determine what I intend to convey to the audience. This process also includes outlining ideas for the visual effects. I plan to incorporate and devising methods for their execution.
For still images or artworks, collaboration with artists is crucial. This entails brainstorming to understand their vision, reaching out to models if necessary, capturing photos, and subsequently editing the entire composition. My toolkit predominantly consists of analog equipment, prominently featuring CRT TVs reminiscent of those from the 90s.
In the early stages, I abstained from using post-production tools like Photoshop, but the current ratio is approximately 70/30. Endless hours are dedicated to fine-tuning my synthesizers in front of the CRT TV, striving to discover the perfect visual composition to capture.
The CRT TV becomes a canvas, capturing the raw energy of the glitched signals. Each flicker and distortion serves as a brushstroke on the canvas of the cathode-ray tube. Music serves as a pivotal element in my composition process when creating my portraits.
It plays a substantial role in visualizing the colors and mood of the scenes I'm creating, influencing the overall atmosphere of my artworks.
During the past 10 years, I had the chance to work with prestigious artists and brands such as A$AP Rocky, Tame Impala, Grimes, Charli XCX, Pantone, Bring Me The Horizon, Sony Music, Warner Music and more.
My work has been exhibited all around the world in many countries such as the USA, Japan, France, UK, Portugal, Italy, South Korea,… and has garnered attention from art enthusiasts and collectors around the world. I’ll continue to explore the possibilities of glitch art and circuit-bending, and will try my best to push the boundaries of what is possible with his medium.
